Public Housing To Weather The Storm:

The Fight for Healthy Public Housing in Seattle

In April 2026, Got Green published a report about the state of public housing in Seattle titled “Public Housing To Weather The Storm.” Informed by door-to-door deep-listening conversations in public housing communities, as well as a review of Seattle Housing Authority’s (SHA) public records, Got Green found that SHA’s public housing is in a dire state of disrepair and neglect. As the report outlines, public housing tenants in Seattle are being forced to live in unhealthy and unsafe housing conditions, waiting far beyond the legal limit for their repairs to be completed, are among thousands of repairs in SHA’s backlog that have remained incomplete, and are ignored and disrespected when trying to communicate with SHA. In this report, Got Green shares statistics, history, the stories of tenants, the fight for healthy public housing, the climate connection, and the demands of tenants.

Our communities deserve healthy public housing that prioritizes the health, safety, and well-being of tenants. Despite significant issues, public housing in Seattle has the potential to be the highest standard of what housing could and should be: housing that is publicly owned to serve the common good, permanently and deeply affordable, accountable to tenants, good for workers and our neighborhoods, and nourishing to the health of people and the planet. SHA can and must fulfill their mission by prioritizing repairs, actively committing to housing quality standards and tenant protections, and preparing for climate resilience.
